DHC/ART

Entrevue réalisée avec Madame Cheryl Sim, commissaire de DHC/ART, en marge du Rallye des galeries 2016.

Comment est-ce que votre galerie se différencie des autres galeries à Montréal?
DHC/ART’s mission is to bring experiences with contemporary art to the general public as a way to underscore how it speaks to the questions, concerns and subjects that reflect and touch our everyday lives and current condition. To that end, all of our programming, including 2-3 major exhibitions per year, a program of events (screenings, performances, round table events and more) and an innovative Education program are all offered free of charge to the public. In terms of programming, we fill a void in the Montreal and Canadian context by bringing major exhibitions by internationally renowned artists, often who have never shown in Canada or Québec before.  Past artists include Christian Marclay, Jenny Holzer, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Joan Jonas and Jake and Dinos Chapman. In regards to its mandate and programming, there is no other organization quite like DHC/ART in Canada.

Qu’est-ce que vous cherchez chez un artiste et pourquoi?
We look for a complex combination of qualities in the artists we work with but generally, we are attracted to work that is conceptually rigorous as well as formally engaging. Whether viewers love or hate any exhibition we present, what is most important is that they are not left indifferent, so we often gravitate towards artists who are working with concerns, questions, issues or subjects that have great relevance to the human condition.

Une œuvre qui vous touche, à chaque fois?
Any painting by Mark Rothko.

Quel type d’expérience souhaitez-vous faire vivre à nos convives le 24 mai prochain?
We are hoping viewers will surrender themselves to Joan Jonas’ way of interpreting the world through myth, gesture and use of space to come away with a sense of how she tells stories in a non-didactic way – at once transmitting beauty as well as a deep concern for our future.
